Editorial

It seems that dinosaurs are a constant attraction to children, young and old alike. I suppose that is why, in 1997, International Dinosaur Month came to be. Now, every year, from October 1st through the 31st, we can openly express our love and appreciation for our friends long gone, but not forgotten.

Dinosaur names have always posed a particular challenge for me. Thank goodness that I have children to tell me how the names are pronounced! I'm not sure if I'm just not remembering, but dinosaurs were not of all that much interest to us as children. Perhaps I was just hanging out with a non-dinosaur group, but these days, it seems that by the time a child learns to speak, they also know at least one type of dinosaur!

This issue is all about celebrating International Dinosaur Month with your child. There's no need to just stick to your standard, run of the mill holidays...teach your child some diversity and look for different things to have fun with! You can even make up your own holidays. When you focus on a theme with your child, you are teaching them how things work together...just like our craft, snack, motor activities, along with our recommended books and music.

Happy International Dinosaur Month!

Reading Rocks! Recommendations

Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! (Boynton on Board) (Board book)

Reviewer:

Parent Champaign, IL

I never really realized how many different types of dinosaurs there were until I read this book, even if they are 'dinosaurs crammed in an elevator.' This book mentions all sorts of dinosaurs, from big to tiny, smooth to spiky and hot to cold. The pictures used to illustrate each type of dinosaur are really wonderful. They are bright, bold, colorful, and, above all, cute. Like all the Boynton books I've read, the words in this book rhyme very well and effortlessly. The rhyming also helps to make the book flow well, and flow well it does. This is a classic Boynton book and is a wonderful.

My Big Dinosaur Book (Priddy Books Big Ideas for Little People) (Board book)

Reviewer:

A busy mom

The "My Big Dinosaur Book" is a great addition to the Big Ideas for Little People series of books (we also have the Trains and Trucks books). Both of my sons love these books -- my 5 year old STUDIES every name, picture, and category and has been reading the Dinosaur book every day since he received it. My 3 year old loves to look at the pictures over and over.

The photos have realistic and colorful models of each dinosaur, most of the full body (a few have just the face). I do agree that pronunciations would be really really nice to have. The heavier board-book style makes it very durable, especially for little ones who are prone to tearing out pages.

This is a must-have addition to the library of any young dinosaur fan!

Craft Of The Month

Dinosaur Egg

Have fun making a huge, hatchable, paper-mache' dinosaur egg!

Materials Needed:

  • One balloon for each dinosaur egg
  • Old newspaper and/or brown-bag paper
  • Flour-water glue (instructions below)
  • Paints (tempera works well) and markers
  • Small toy dinosaur (optional)

Directions:

  1. To make flour-water glue, mix 1 cup of flour into 1 cup of water until the mixture is thin and runny. Stir into 4 cups of boiling water. Simmer for about 3 minutes, then cool.
  2. Have your child tear strips of newspaper and/or brown bag paper. Strips should be about 1 inch wide, any length.
  3. Blow up a balloon for your child. For an extra special dinosaur egg, put a small, plastic dinosaur inside the balloon before blowing it up.
  4. Dip each strip of paper in the flour glue and wrap around the balloon. Have at least two layers surrounding the balloon. Let it dry (at least overnight) after each layer.

Let the dinosaur egg dry for a few days. When it is dry, you can pop and remove the balloon from inside the egg.
  5. After the dinosaur egg is completely dry, decorate with paint or markers. Let your child know that no one knows what color the dinosaurs' eggs were. You can later "hatch" your egg and find a tiny dinosaur.

Music Rocks! Recommendations

Bop, Bop Dinosaur
Jim Cosgrove

Reviewer: Amazon Editorial Staff

Bop, Bop Dinosaur is now re-recorded, re-mastered and better than ever! Seven years ago, Jim Cosgrove recorded Bop, Bop Dinosaur thinking it would be a one-time adventure. Well, thousands of copies later and the subsequent release of four additional CD's, the career of "Mr. Stinky Feet" has exceeded all expectations.

Most Amazing Dinosaur Songs

Reviewer: Jeff

We got this CD for Christmas and our children (ages 3 & 4) absolutely love it. We knew our son would, he loves all things dinosaur, but even our daughter begs to listen to this, and she is not a dino fan. The songs are catchy, the tunes make the words easy to remember, it is educational. To me, the CD seemed a bit annoying to listen to at first, and I actually like Disney music. But after listening to it several dozen times in the last few weeks, it is starting to grow on me. It does not fade into the background like some other children's music so we have to limit how many times we play it in a row or it could drive us crazy. But overall- this is a great CD to give to any dino lover, they will love it.

Practical Parenting - Fun Games for a Good Memory
by Catherine Calder

Having a good memory is important. It is vital to remember things that you’ve read and discussed with others. You can improve your child’s memory (and your own) with practice.

Here are a couple of fun games that you can play anywhere. They can help to keep your brains active when traveling or waiting for an appointment. No equipment is needed – always a handy thing!

Shopping List Games

1) Children need to practice to develop their short term memory. A good game to encourage this is the shopping list game.

Adult -‘I went to the store and bought an apple.’

Child -‘I went to the store and bought an apple and a sausage.'

Adult -‘I went to the store and bought an apple, a sausage, and some carrots.’

Child -‘I went to the store and bought an apple, a sausage, some carrots, and a cake.’

Take turns, each time repeating the list that has been said before and adding an extra item.

2) This type of game could be played using a meal theme.

Adult – ‘For lunch I had a bowl of soup.’

Child – ‘For lunch I had a bowl of soup and a slice of bread.’

Think of other themes that you could use. If you were playing this while you are on holiday it could be things that you would pack in a suitcase.

For Older Kids

To make the game more difficult you can start each new item with the next letter of the alphabet. For the shopping list game the items could be Apple, Beans, Cookies, Doughnuts and so on.

This is a fun way to spend time with your child and keep your brains active too.
