Editorial

Hello!

Summer is finally within sight. Longer, sunnier days to help my mood, warmer weather calling my children outside for needed fresh air and exercise, and less stict schedules make it my favorite season by far.

Although I've never been much of a gardener myself, one of the things I enjoy most about the warmer weather is the beauty and smell of the summer flowers. Garden trips are always on our "to do frequently" list. So to help encourage the onset of summer, I am celebrating my lovely summer flowers with this issue!

Our torn paper flower craft this month was very fun to make and something all ages will enjoy. The featured finished art work was done by my 6 year old son, but I have just recently done this activity, with great success, with a 3 and 4 year old as well.

Many of you will also have older children home for the summer. Be sure to read our featured article, Five Tips for Keeping Your Kids from Getting Bored This Summer by Polly Schlafhauser. Polly offers some great suggestions to help maintain peace in your home and save you from hearing "I'm bored!" over and over!

Have a great start of summer! Make sure that you plan a little special time with your child(ren) every day. Focus on your family and all the joy that it brings.

Best wishes!
Mari

Reading Rocks! Recommendations

Flower Garden

Reviewer: anonymous

We have a two-year-old daughter who picks this book out every day and every night to read. The illustrations are breathtaking. The story is simple but relevant; we follow every detail as the father and daughter walk the city street and ride the bus. We love to watch the daughter planting the flowers with her father; the mother coming home from school to see her birthday surprise. I have no doubt that this book will be with us for another generation or more (at least in our house). Thank you to the two wonderful artists who created such a special book.

Mouse's First Summer

I bought this cute book after seeing the great, vivid pictures in it. When I got home, I read this book to our baby to be and my husband. My husband loved it. It has a sing songy, repetition to it that will be great for our baby as he gets older. I definitely was pleased and I am excited to collect the rest of the Mouse books from this author.

Music Rocks! Recommendations

A Flower Fairy Alphabet

Tommasina "Sina"

Both my 6 and 3 year old daughters love this CD. The music is well done and even my husband and I enjoy listening to this CD. That is rare, since most kids' CDs can be mind numbing! The songs are soft enough to let them listen to before bed, but also engaging enough for playtime.

The Sea, Beach, and Summer Stuff
Geof Johnson

An energetic, charismatic performer, who's love for children and children's music can be heard in every song.

Winner of the Parents' Choice Award, National Parenting Seal of Approval, Children's Music Web Award, twice nominated for DMX Music's Favorite Children's Album, Nominated for Just Plain Folks Children's Album of the Year, and twice featured on Canadian broadcaster Galaxy's Top Ten Recommended list.

Funky, rhythmic, fun, and beachy songs for kids 1-8 years old.

The sun makes the outside a warm place to play

It makes the flowers grow each day

The sun hides its face during the night

But during the daytime it shines - oh so bright

Five Tips for Keeping Your Kids from Getting Bored This Summer
by Polly Schlafhauser

Free from their school routines and extra curricular activities, many kids can get bored quickly with the carefree days of summer. Summers are meant to be a downtime for families, an opportunity to decompress from an often hectic school year, but if left too unstructured, kids can become bored and not so pleasant to be around. So to help every parent out there maintain a peaceful easy summer here are a few tips.

Maintain some type of structure to your child’s day. For parents who work outside the home, a day camp might be the best option here. Day camps give kids just enough structure to help maintain routines, but are often relaxed enough for kids to feel relieved from the daily pressures of school and extra curricular activities. For parents who don’t work outside the home, maintaining a routine can be a little more of a challenge. Start by keeping bedtimes and morning times relatively the same each day. Allow for the flexibility and pleasures of extended bedtimes, but try and keep them consistent everyday. Plan recurring outings (i.e. the library, swimming, museums, and picnics) for the same day each week. Always make sure you have at least one “do nothing” day built into the schedule. Monday’s are often a good day for these because kids are often tired from the weekends and need a little time to unwind.

Arrange for your children to have time to play with kids other than their siblings. Nothing is worse than siblings who have grown tired of one another after only two weeks of summer break. Prevent this by arranging for your kids to play alone with their friends. Swap play dates or arrange sleepovers, or arrange for your children to take a camp with their friends.

Have backup activities on hand as a last minute response to a sudden onset of the summer blues. Craft kits, science experiments, and yard games are all good options. Have the supplies and ideas on hand and stored in a box, so they are in easy access when needed.

Keep them learning with fun relaxed learning activities. Reading contests and challenges are often a good way to keep their minds alert and reading throughout the summer. Check with your local library for one in your area. Summer activity books are another good option. Designed specifically for summer breaks, these activity books help keep the material they learned in school fresh in their minds.

Let them explore their interests by enrolling them in a camp or class. Use the relaxing days of summer to encourage your kids to learn something new or pursue an interest they didn’t have time to learn during the school year. The relaxing summer atmosphere is often a good time to try these things because kids often will feel less pressure to succeed and perform.
