Editorial

Hello! I'm so excited to be publishing the 13th issue of the RockIt Times AmuseLetter. I can hardly believe that its already been a year since we began publication, and I find it harder to believe how far this AmuseLetter has come since our humble beginnings. I want to give a special thanks to Jamie Puffpaff, the founder and president of Rock-It Productions, Inc., who was wonderful enough to allow me to put this together for you.

This year is the 10th anniversary, or "birthday" as I like to refer to it, of Rock-It Productions, Inc. I personally am celebrating my 4th year with Rock-It Productions as a Kid Rock instructor. It is so rewarding to be a part of something that touches so many children and so many families in such a positive way. To be able to guide the creative play of children and to be able to assist in the bonding of imagination between a parent and child is priceless and always rewarding.

In the day of the electronic baby-sitter called "television" it is vitally important for us to spend time developing the imaginations of our children. Imagination will assist your child as they enter school. It will help to take the "I'm bored!" out of a rainy day. And best yet, it will leave your child with wonderful memories of childhood that don't focus on what his/her favorite TV show was.

I have some wonderful memories of seeing the circus as a child, then coming home to have a circus of my own. My stuffed animals became wild circus beasts, my dolls dressed as clowns, and I, of course, took the roll of ringmaster/gymnast/tight rope walker/lion tamer/elephant trainer/anything else I considered a cool circus job. I was fortunate enough to have parents, a grandmother and a sister who didn't mind watching my performance at least a dozen times each. But even without an audience, I could entertain myself for quite some time as I made up daring feats and funny antics for my circus. I hope that this issue helps to spark some great imaginary circus play for you and your child!

With the warmer weather approaching, I have found myself looking at cute spring and summer clothes, not only for myself (okay, mostly for myself), but also for my children. I have boys, so it's not quite as much fun for me as if I had a girl to dress, but it is a necessity of the year.

Clothes for warmer weather certainly mean less coverage, and less coverage leaves less room for a diaper or pullup. It seems that recently I have been having a lot of discussions with my Kid Rock parents about potty training techniques, leading me to believe that very few parents are anxious to hit the summer with a huge diaper bag. I ran across a fun, little potty training strategy and I decided to add it as our article of the month. Your new problem might be trying to get your child OFF the potty!

Thanks for reading my rambling! I would love to have pictures of your child completing any of the activities from the AmuseLetter or enjoying a Kid Rock class or party...if you have any, please share! I promise to find a wonderful home for them on our website and announce them here. Also, let me hear your feedback! I know that people are reading, but would you believe that no one ever writes? I get a bit lonely, especially on breaks between our Kid Rock sessions. All my contact information can be found below. I'll be looking forward to hearing from you!

Be sure to look for our next issue to come out the first of May...we have a fun contest for you!

Until next time!
Sincerely,
Mari

P.S. Speaking of shopping....I LOVE Target and just recently found Target Kids online. It's a great way to get your kid's shopping done from the comfort of home. You can also create a "Wish List" of stuff you want, just in case your child is lucky enough to have an out-of-town Grandma who is dying to do a little shopping for them. You might even be able to find something for yourself without anyone telling you they are bored.

Last Night I Dreamed a Circus
Reviewed by Roz Levine (Virginia)

"Last night I dreamed a circus. I spun circles round the stars. And juggled a rose garden..." So begins children's books newcomer, author, Maya Gottfried's, ode to the fun and excitement found under the big top. Her simple, spare, lyrical text is evocative and filled with imagery and magical descriptions that transports the reader into the dream. But it's illustrator, Robert Rahway Zakanitch's bold, bright and vivid watercolors that really makes this picture book a winner. Each dramatic illustration is rich in dazzling color, intricate shapes and patterns, and eye-catching detail, and little ones will want to linger and explore every stunning page. Together word and art offers a vibrant, captivating circus adventure. Perfect for story time, Last Night I Dreamed A Circus is a preschool crowd pleaser that begs to be read aloud and shared.

Spot Goes To The Circus
Reviewed by the School Library Journal

This new book about the adventures of Spot will be eagerly greeted by his fans. The clear, simple color illustrations of objects will be easily identified by toddlers, and the "lift-the-flap" sections are fully integrated with the text and illustrations. In this story, the engaging puppy chases his toy ball as it bounces into and through a circus tent. Youngsters will delight in lifting the cleverly disguised flaps each time Spot believes he has found his ball only to discover that he has mistaken it for the clown's nose, the elephant's balloons, or the bareback rider's ball. He continues his search until he finds it balanced on the end of a seal's nose. The ending has a nice twist: the seal teaches Spot to balance the ball on the end of his own nose.

Creative Potty Training
by Valerie Garner

When I was potty training my two young boys, I discovered this method of potty training that made it an enjoyable, yet very effective way to potty train toddlers.

First, make sure your child is ready for potty training, shows interest, wants "big kids pants" etc. If they show no signs of readiness, it may be best to let them mature a bit more.

Make this a game, make it fun and you will not run into stubborn opposition (after all it is the child's body). Go out and buy or find around the house items you don't normally let your child play with. Some examples might be toys that can be used in water (3 or 4 things), like little plastic pitchers, balls, tiny cups, whatever, but make them SPECIAL. The only real rule to this game is these special "potty" toys can only be played with while the child is sitting on the potty! This is very important; no breaking this one rule, or it won't work.

Once the child is sitting on the potty fill a large bowl or small bucket with lukewarm or tepid water, place the new "potty" toys in the bowl and set the bowl of water in front of the child. On the floor if the potty seat is low, or if it's a potty seat that sits on top of the regular toilet, set the bowl of water on a TV tray or something that provides a step, in front of the child. When the child places his/her hands in the lukewarm water to play with the toys, if the child needs to physically go, they nearly instantly go potty (it's almost an instinctive type of physical reaction), then cheer, cheer, cheer! Give lots of praise, and if you wish to give some type of a treat, go ahead.

Let them play as long as they want, as long as they sit on the potty. When they are done playing, put the toys away for next time. This is really great because it makes it fun for them so they cooperate, it totally ends all power struggles, and also no more waiting and waiting for them to go only to have them go potty as soon as the diaper goes back on. They also feel good because they have immediate success. Potty training no. 2 was more difficult I found, that just came with some time and patience and them learning in their own space and way, relax, it will happen.

Do you want to know how I get this idea? It's kind of a funny thing, my husband used to be in the military and when he was young in boot camp they used to always play jokes on each other in the night by dipping the hand of someone who was sleeping, into a pan of lukewarm water, thus making the person wet the bed. It just seemed like a natural progression to use this trick for good use in the potty training area and it worked great!
